About Kelly Chambers
Kelly first moved to the Sunshine Coast from the UK in 1987. He attended the local TAFE to complete an Associate Diploma in Business and returned to the UK to work in the commodities market at the London Metal Exchange. He returned to Australia in 1994 and joined a travelling carnival that took him to Aboriginal communities throughout the Northern Territory. At the end of 1995 Kelly visited South Africa where he managed a pub and sold didgeridoos until returning to the Sunshine Coast in 1999.
On return, Kelly ran a courier business for two years until deciding to seek further education and completing a Diploma of Multimedia with QANTM College at the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2001. This qualification gave him direct entry into a BA, which he completed in 2005 majoring in Australian Cultural Studies. After graduating he worked with young people in care and in shelters and continues to work with disability services and people using facilitated communication.
Since 2006, while completing a Graduate Diploma in Education, Kelly started teaching in the Tertiary Preparation Pathways program at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He has been an advocate for innovative learning and teaching practices that engage in critical consciousness, seeing education as potentially life changing. These interests and experiences facilitate his position at Blackall Range Independent School where he has run learning programs, professional development workshops and is a member of the school’s Executive Committee.
